This step-by-step how-to-draw a puppy guide will walk you through the steps to learn how to draw a cute puppy!
How to Draw A Puppy
Step 1
To begin this guide on how to draw a puppy, let’s start with your puppy’s face. Using the reference image as a guide, carefully draw a line using some curved lines.
The top of the head should be round with a much longer curve to the right. If you are happy with how this step looks, you can move on to step 2.
Step 2
Now that you’ve started drawing your pup’s head let’s add an ear for your pup.
This ear on our left is flipped back all the way, so you can’t see the inner ear of this ear.
This is created with another very curvy line that folds back on itself.
Step 3
We’ll add the other ear in this next step. This folds back, and with the angle of this ear, you can see a bit of the inner ear.
You can use the reference image from our guide to add another line that curves around itself, similar to the previous one.
Step 4
The head and ears are ready at this stage of our how-to-draw puppy guide, so let’s add a cute face to your puppy now. There are certain elements on the face, so let’s go step by step.
Starting with the eyes, we’ll make them extra large and round for a cuter look. They consist of some very curved lines for the outline containing circles.
If you refer to the reference image, it will help a lot to make them look like the example. They will have short curved lines across them to look like cute lashes to them.
You can also use some simpler circles with dots for a less detailed look if you prefer!
After drawing the eyes, you can draw a cute little nose. The mouth underneath will be very curved with the mouth and tongue open. When you’re done with the face, it’s time for step 6!
Step 5
For step 5 of how to draw a puppy, we will use another curvy line going down from the head to shape your puppy’s back.
Then you can draw a small but curvy tail to show your adorable pup is happy!
Step 6
The drawing of your pup sitting comfortably on the floor, and we will show how he is sitting by drawing some legs for him in this step.
The front legs are much straighter and stretch out, with one coming under the head and the other coming off the chest.
Then you can draw cute paws at the end of them as they appear in the picture.
The back leg will be much more rounded to show the puppy is sitting comfortably.
Step 7
You’re drawn to your pup now, but he could use some final touches!
We’ll show you an idea of some details that you could draw, but feel free to draw other patterns or details you like!
For our details, we drew a circular shape around the eye and one on the back to add character to the pup.
Step 8
This tutorial on how to draw a puppy has ended, but before it’s done, your puppy needs one more thing: nice colours!
The image we have provided offers you a way to colour your pup, but this is a step where you should show your creativity!
You could colour this puppy drawing to look like a puppy or dog you have owned or make it look like a puppy you would like to have one day.
Once you’ve picked your colours, you can also have fun picking and experimenting with fun art media like paint, watercolour, crayons, and more.
