The ultimate temperament is a merge of the four known temperaments already in existence. This terminology “ultimate temperament” was invented by Prosper Yole on Knowseeker.com and here is what it means to have the ultimate temperament.
Before we talk about the ultimate temperament, it will be nice to first talk about what temperaments are and the four temperaments known from the four temperaments.
Temperaments refer to the prevailing attitude, mood and personality of an individual. They can be described as one’s nature which in turn determines one’s behaviours. The idea of temperaments was best described using the temperament theories, of which the most popular is the four temperament theory.
The four temperament theory is a psychoanalytic or proto-psychologic theory that classifies human behaviours into four temperaments. Psychoanalysis is a concept popularized by Sigmund Freud (hailed as the Father of Psychoanalytic Theory) that described that there is a relationship between peoples’ attitudes (what is expressed) and their subconscious minds. The four temperament theory describes people’s attitudes towards other people and themselves, and while some of these temperaments may look negative from the outset, they all have their various strengths and weaknesses.
The Four Temperaments
Cholerics
Choleric derives its name from bile or yellowish colour (Latin. Cholericus for bilious). Cholerics are generally known to be extroverted and arrogant and we are going to explore these features together here. They are dominant, authoritative, and daring. Cholerics are also tough and domineering. They love to challenge people to prove themselves and are willing to defend themselves when they are opposed.
Cholerics are extroverted, proud, and sacrificial. They strive for independence as a way of maintaining their self-esteem.
Sanguines
The name ‘Sanguine” is derived from the colour of blood (of both Latin and French origin). Sanguines are social, expressive and loving. They are social, free-spirited, and openly emotional. They are chatty, and expressive and love company, and the more they are surrounded by people, the happier they get. They always want to be the centre of attraction and oftentimes intrude into a conversation or say something that makes all eyes to turn at them.
Phlegmatics
The name is derived from phlegm (Latin. for ‘flame’ and inflammation). However, for some unknown reasons, phlegmatic temperament was associated with the ‘cold or cool’ personality type. Phlegmatic individuals are described as calm, introverted, indecisive, and submissive. They are also cool-headed, and eager to please others instead of trying to assert themselves. They love peace even to their own discomfort, but they are indecisive and work best as followers.
Melancholics
They derive their name from black bile (melan – black; chole – bile). They are generally emotionally sensitive and are best described as perfectionistic introverts. They hold themselves and other people to very high standards and expectations. This makes them extremely unsatisfied and disappointed when they or other people do not meet up to these standards. Melancholists are also very sensitive and easily express emotions like fear, crying, or disappointment but they would prefer to flee from everything that causes them significant distress rather than confront it.
The Ultimate Temperament
The ultimate temperament was first publicly used on Knowseeker and it refers to a blend of the four temperaments in a more harmonious way. Each of the four temperaments have their flaws and weaknesses but they have great attributes as well. The ultimate temperament is therefore an artificial creation to develop the human self to pick up the good attributes of the different temperaments and discard the negative ones.
It optimizes the strengths or the different temperaments and sheds off their weaknesses. The product of this is a stronger and better version of ourselves, hence, it is referred to as the ultimate temperament.
