Water cooler towers are used in nuclear power plants or other factories like food manufacturers or chemical factories that require a lot of heat to manufacture products. With the help of a cooling tower, the interior of these factories and plants can stay cool and balance out the temperature for the workers and the machines. This is because the water cooler towers use a system that is found in nature too. The cooling tower uses water to extract the heat from the air and evaporate it together. It leaves behind a cooling sensation that is distributed throughout the space. The water is brought in through cooling tower pumps and into the tower. The shape and size of the cooling towers depend on the purpose of their use. Therefore before getting a cooling tower, compare it with the area. If you use a comparatively big cooler, the plant or industry might have difficulty using a furnace or heater since the interior will have low temperatures constantly. On the other hand, it will become extremely hot if the water cooler towers are smaller in size. Hence make sure to compare and measure before you invest in the equipment.

Types of cooling towers:

Although there are different types of cooling towers used in different factories, the mechanism of all the towers is the same. They even have the same appliances including cooling tower pumps and fill media to help the water evaporate. Let us take a look at some popular cooling towers used by many industries:

  • Cross-flow cooling tower – Cross-flow towers use a design that forces hot water through the fill media with the help of gravity. Simultaneously, the air is blown on the water falling through the fill media, resulting in a cross-flow of air with water. This is why it is called such. There is no other force acting against the falling of the water which is distributed in hot water basins evenly.
  • Counter-flow cooling tower – Such water cooling towers have a similar design to the cross-flow tower but the air is flowing from a much lower place than the other place. They flow upwards as usual and end with a cooling-down phase. The nozzles are placed farther apart from each other to not obstruct the flow. 
  • Forced draft cooling towers – The most popular and economical tower that is used by many factories for their use is the forced draft cooling tower. This is because the design of this tower forces the heat generated during the process out into the air. The flow of air countering the hot water will result in the heat transferring to the cooling fill. Forced draft cooling towers are powerful.
  • Induced draft cooling tower – This tower, albeit installed with the same applications as the others, has a fan to drive out the air outside. The air flows upwards and the fan exhausts it out. This cooling tower’s goal is to keep the air from circulating inside.
